New Hope Railroad offers new ways to explore Bucks County

Posted

The New Hope Railroad may be centuries old, but its mix of old-world charm and unique new adventures continues to draw in visitors every year.

One of its newest adventures is the Rail Bike Experience, which offers panoramic views of the Bucks County landscape.

Mike Donovan, General Manager of the New Hope Railroad, recently spoke with Metro Philly Suburbs about the historic charm of the railroad.

“The line was originally run in the area in 1891, and in 1966 the first tourist train was established to preserve the golden era of travel,” he explained.

“There is a generational aspect to people’s fascination with the railroad. Parents bring their kids because they want them to have the same experience they did growing up.”

Donovan added that sometimes it is a specific event that people are drawn to, like Santa’s North Pole Express Train or the rail bikes.

The Rail Bike Experience

The New Hope Railroad’s Rail Bike offers a unique way to experience Bucks County, giving riders the chance to explore the landscape on a rail bike equipped with electric pedal assist. Instead of watching the scenery pass by from a train window, you will be immersed right in it.

The bike ride either takes you from Lahaska to Buckingham or New Hope to Lahaska. The Lahaska to Buckingham trip is 6 miles roundtrip, lasts about 90 minutes and takes you through flat woodlands. The New Hope to Lahaska is a longer trip, 8 miles roundtrip, lasting 120 minutes. It includes a moderate to difficult climb to Lahaska. The return trip to New Hope, however, is downhill.

The New Hope Train Station, the Witch’s Hat train station, which dates back to 1891, is located at 32 West Bridge Street in New Hope. The Lahaska Station is located at 1917 Street Road in New Hope. For a complete schedule and ticket prices, visit newhoperailroad.com

Other adventures

If you prefer a more traditional train experience, the New Hope Railroad offers plenty of options, including a ride aboard an authentic 1900s train departing from the historic 1891 Witch’s Hat Train Station on West Bridge Street.

Here are some of the railroad’s current and upcoming vintage train experiences:

The Speakeasy Train is your chance to step back in time to the 1920s prohibition era. In one of the railroad’s early 1900s parlor cars, you will enjoy demi cocktails and canapés. Don’t forget to wear your favorite fashions from the Roaring Twenties.

The Wine & Tapas Train is a not-to-be missed journey through Buckingham Valley. The 90-minute trip includes a selection of local wines and an assortment of small plates.

The Fall Foliage Excursion is not too far away now that the end of summer is in sight. During this 90-minute trip, the beautiful fall foliage of Bucks County will be on full display. A storyteller will be on board to share stories along your journey. Departure is from the Witch’s Hat Train Station.

Santa’s North Pole Express Train is a favorite among young families and the young at heart. Take a special train journey with Santa and Mrs. Claus while listening to Christmas Carols and soaking in the holiday spirit.
