Weather damage, repairs and homeowner insurance coverage

Posted

Living in the Northeast, we face a wide range of weather conditions that can take a toll on our home and property. As a local full-service contractor, we often see the damage caused by seasonal storms and regularly help homeowners navigate both repairs and potential insurance claims.

Winters can bring snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. These conditions commonly cause roof damage, ice dams, and frozen or burst pipes. Ice dams, in particular, can force melting snow under roof shingles, leading to leaks and interior water damage.

Spring and summer weather can be equally challenging. Intense rainstorms, nor’easters, and high winds can damage roofs, siding, gutters, and foundations. Wet conditions combined with high winds can leave trees vulnerable to falling which can cause significant damage to the home itself as well as to exterior structures such as sheds, fences, etc.

When it comes to homeowners insurance, many types of weather-related damage may be covered—depending on your policy. Generally, sudden and accidental damage from wind, hail, and falling trees is covered, including structural damage to roofs, siding, and interior areas affected by wind-driven rain.

Burst pipes caused by freezing temperatures are usually covered as long as the home was adequately heated and maintained. Damage caused by long-term neglect, such as gradual roof deterioration, is normally excluded.

If you experience damage due to a weather related event, it is important to document the issue and contact your contractor and insurance provider right away.

Our team offers free consultations to assess the damage, provide a repair estimate, and guide you through the insurance process to help restore your home.
